I want to move an old pension across
Who can transfer in a pension?
You can transfer another pension into your LGPS pension if you:
- Apply within 12 months of joining the LGPS. After this, both we and your employer need to agree if the old pension is outside the LGPS.
- Are under 75 and currently paying into the LGPS.
You can’t transfer a pension if you’re already receiving pension payments.
What types of pensions can I transfer?
You can transfer:
- previous LGPS pensions
- other occupational pensions
- self-employed pensions
- personal pensions
- stakeholder pensions
- additional voluntary contribution (AVC) plans.
Transferring into the LGPS is free, but your old provider might charge a fee. It’s good to check with them first! Sometimes, transfers won’t be accepted. We’ll let you know if this applies to your case.
How do I transfer?
From another LGPS Fund in England and Wales
- If you’ve a previous pension in the LGPS (England and Wales), let us know on our membership form.
- Pensions was built up after 31 March 2014, will transfer automatically unless you tell us not to.
- Pensions from before 1 April 2014 stay separate unless you ask us to transfer it.
From other pension schemes or LGPS Fund outside of England and Wales
- Fill in the Transfer in pack (non-England and Wales LGPS).
- We’ll request a cash equivalent transfer value (CETV) from your previous provider and provide you with written details about the transfer benefits to help you decide.
