Scheduled bodies
What are scheduled bodies?
These are local government employers such as:
- local authorities (county councils, district/borough councils, unitary authorities, metropolitan districts, London boroughs)
- police and fire authorities (civilian staff only)
- coroners
- academy trusts (non-teaching staff)
- sixth form colleges
- higher education corporations
- other bodies listed in part 1 of schedule 2 of the LGPS regulations
Responsibilities
Scheduled bodies must enrol eligible employees into the LGPS. In general, eligibility usually includes employees who don’t qualify for other public sector pension schemes and meet the necessary criteria.
How to join
Scheduled bodies don’t go through a formal joining process. In most cases, these bodies already exist. However, there are situations where a new scheduled body may be created. For example, this may happen when LEA schools convert to academy trusts or when new local authorities emerge due to local government reorganisation.
