How does flexible retirement work?
Under flexible retirement, a member can reduce their hours or move to a less senior position. They can take some or all their pension. They must take any pension they’ve built up before 1 April 2008.
A member can take flexible retirement:
- from age 55 onwards (increasing to 57 from 6 April 2028)
- if they’ve been an active member of the LGPS for at least 2 years
- only if their employer agrees.
Each employer within the LGPS has their own policy on flexible retirement. A member thinking about flexible retirement should ask their employer about their policy.
