What your employer needs to do

Your employer will decide if you qualify for ill health retirement and which tier applies. We’ll only be told about the result of the assessment once your employer has approved the retirement. Should your employer not approve the retirement they won’t contact us.

If you’re unhappy with the result, you should discuss this with your employer. If you’re still unhappy after your discussion, you can raise a dispute, again with your employer.

When you qualify for an ill health retirement, your employer needs to give us:

  • your completed retirement form
  • a final pay calculation (if applicable), confirming the date you have retired on ill health grounds
  • an LGPS medical certificate completed by both the independent doctor and your employer.
