Who can get an LGPS ill health pension?

You must have paid into the LGPS for at least 2 years to qualify for ill health benefits. Your employer must agree that you’re:

  •        permanently unable to do your current job until your normal pension age, and
  •        not immediately capable to do gainful employment in another role.

Your normal pension age in the LGPS is linked to your State Pension age. You can check your State Pension age on the Government’s website.

Gainful employment means paid employment for at least 30 hours a week for at least a year.

Your employer must get the opinion of an appropriately qualified independent doctor chosen by them, and agreed by the Pension Fund, before they decide.
