Leaving the LGPS
If you leave the LGPS before you retire and have at least two years’ qualifying membership, your pension is deferred. This means it’s kept for you until you retire. You can usually take it from age 55.
From 6 April 2028, the earliest age you can take your pension will rise from 55 to 57.
If you leave the LGPS with less than two years in the scheme, you may be able to get your contributions back, minus tax.
